A reporter who found the story in everything

For fourty-eight years, Tony Sauro lived in Stockton, California and reported on the people, teams and moments that shaped Stockton and the world of sports, music and community around it. He served as Sports Information Director at University of the Pacific before beginning his 45 year career at The Stockton Record where he filed copy filled with precision, diligence, and an unshakeable respect for the craft of journalism. Across decades of bylines, he chronicled the games, the personalities, and the quiet human moments that others overlooked.

He never chased the headline, though he loved writing a good one. He chased the detail — the nervous rookie's hands, the coach's pause before an honest answer, the way a stadium hushes and then roars. Colleagues learned that a Sauro column would tell you not just what happened, but why it mattered.

This archive gathers the moments that defined a remarkable career — and invites those who knew his work to add their own voice to the record.
